The region’s reputation rests on a combination of old winemaking traditions, the character of Tempranillo and a deep relationship with oak. It is a wine style that can feel completely at home with an ordinary meal, yet still offer enough detail to keep a curious drinker exploring the glass.\n\n ![Rioja wine scene](https://publicasta.com/storage/projects/34/pages/396/2026/08/7f4501d2-5d3d-4e1a-a5d8-9fae4ccf8972.webp)\n\n ![Rioja vineyard landscape](https://publicasta.com/storage/projects/34/pages/396/2026/08/5bfb8423-5fc1-4dc0-a0c9-2e19dd5aa382.webp)\n\n ![Wine ageing in oak barrels](https://publicasta.com/storage/projects/34/pages/396/2026/08/787ef0a3-bd05-4190-b507-95a666951431.webp)\n\n ![A bottle and glass of Rioja wine](https://publicasta.com/storage/projects/34/pages/396/2026/08/dac1657d-c363-4dd2-bd36-628d3accd141.webp)\n\n ![Traditional Rioja winery architecture](https://publicasta.com/storage/projects/34/pages/396/2026/08/45ed0c79-6adc-4367-816f-296f04aee714.webp)\n\n ## A region shaped by history\n\n Wine was being made in the valley of the Ebro as far back as the time of the ancient Romans. During the Middle Ages, monasteries helped keep production going. Rioja’s defining leap onto the wider stage, however, came much later and was linked to a crisis across the border.\n\n In the 1860s, phylloxera devastated French vineyards. Winemakers from Bordeaux began moving to Rioja in search of new sources of grapes. Their arrival left a lasting mark. They brought important techniques, including ageing wine in small 225-litre oak barrels, known as barriques, as well as methods for clarifying wine.\n\n That French influence did not erase Rioja’s local identity. Instead, it became part of the framework that helped the region develop a recognizable standard of quality. Rioja became the first area in Spain to receive Denominación de Origen status in 1925. In 1991, it was also the first to receive the higher DOCa, or Calificada, category, associated with especially strict quality control.\n\n ## Tempranillo, fruit and oak\n\n The main red-wine personality of Rioja comes from Tempranillo. The variety gives the wine a firm, expressive character, while time in oak can add a more seductive layer of spice and wood. The result depends greatly on the ageing category, which is why the label is worth reading before opening the bottle.\n\n The simplest category is **Genérico**, sometimes described as **Joven**. These wines receive no oak ageing, or only a small amount. They are fresh, juicy and fruit-driven, with the kind of easy character that suits a weekday table.\n\n **Crianza** is aged for at least two years, including at least one year in oak. Here the ripe-berry character is joined by light vanilla and warm spice. It is the category many people reach for when they want Rioja to show both its fruit and its barrel influence without becoming too heavy.\n\n **Reserva** is aged for at least three years, with a minimum of one year in oak and six months in the bottle. The longer rest brings a more complex profile, with notes associated with leather, tobacco and dried fruit.\n\n At the top of this progression is **Gran Reserva**. It is aged for at least five years, including at least two years in oak and two years in the bottle. These wines are made only in the best harvest years and are intended to develop a particularly rich bouquet.\n\n This system gives Rioja a practical advantage at the point of purchase. You do not need to guess entirely from a poetic label or an expensive-looking bottle. The ageing term offers a quick indication of the style waiting inside: bright and direct, balanced and gently spiced, mature and layered, or exceptionally developed.\n\n ## Rioja has a playful side\n\n The region is serious about wine, but it is not solemn about it. Rioja’s cellars are said to hold more than 1.3 million oak barrels at the same time, described in the source material as a world record. That immense barrel culture helps explain why oak is so central to the region’s image.\n\n Rioja is also connected with some of the earliest written texts in old Spanish. Manuscripts found in the local monasteries of Suso and Yuso already mentioned the area’s wine. In this region, language, religious history and winemaking sit unusually close together.\n\n Then there is the Batalla del Vino, or Wine Battle, held every year on June 29 in the town of Haro. Thousands of people dressed in white throw red wine over one another using buckets, containers and water pistols. It is difficult to imagine a more direct reminder that wine can be part of a place’s culture, not only something poured into a glass.\n\n ## Not only red\n\n Red wines make up roughly 85 to 90 percent of production, but Rioja is not limited to them. The region also produces white wine from the Viura grape. A white Rioja Reserva is presented as a rare, full-bodied and refined style, offering a different way to understand the region’s interest in ageing.\n\n The same contrast appears in the landscape and architecture. Traditional bodegas stand alongside striking modern buildings, including the futuristic hotel at the Marqués de Riscal winery, designed by Frank Gehry. Old cellars and daring architecture may seem like opposites, yet together they capture Rioja’s character: rooted in inherited methods, while still willing to look forward.\n\n Rioja’s status as Spain’s wine signature therefore comes from more than its familiarity. Its story includes Roman-era foundations, medieval monastic support, French technical influence, Tempranillo, a clear ageing vocabulary and traditions that range from meticulous cellar work to a town-wide wine fight. That mixture gives the region its particular voice. You can choose a young, fruity bottle for a simple dinner, or follow the label toward a more mature style shaped by years in barrel and bottle. Either way, Rioja offers a history you can taste without needing to turn the meal into a ceremony.","available_translations":[{"language":"de","title":"Rioja: Wie Spaniens charakteristischer Wein seinen Ruf erlangte","html_url":"https://publicasta.com/everyday_kitchen/rioja_spains_wine_signature?lang=de","markdown_url":"https://publicasta.com/everyday_kitchen/rioja_spains_wine_signature.md?lang=de","json_url":"https://publicasta.com/everyday_kitchen/rioja_spains_wine_signature.json?lang=de","api_url":"https://publicasta.com/api/public/v1/channels/everyday_kitchen/articles/rioja_spains_wine_signature?lang=de"},{"language":"en","title":"Rioja: How Spain’s Signature Wine Built Its Reputation","html_url":"https://publicasta.com/everyday_kitchen/rioja_spains_wine_signature?lang=en","markdown_url":"https://publicasta.com/everyday_kitchen/rioja_spains_wine_signature.md?lang=en","json_url":"https://publicasta.com/everyday_kitchen/rioja_spains_wine_signature.json?lang=en","api_url":"https://publicasta.com/api/public/v1/channels/everyday_kitchen/articles/rioja_spains_wine_signature?lang=en"},{"language":"es","title":"Rioja: cómo el vino emblemático de España construyó su reputación","html_url":"https://publicasta.com/everyday_kitchen/rioja_spains_wine_signature?lang=es","markdown_url":"https://publicasta.com/everyday_kitchen/rioja_spains_wine_signature.md?lang=es","json_url":"https://publicasta.com/everyday_kitchen/rioja_spains_wine_signature.json?lang=es","api_url":"https://publicasta.com/api/public/v1/channels/everyday_kitchen/articles/rioja_spains_wine_signature?lang=es"},{"language":"fr","title":"Rioja : comment le vin emblématique d’Espagne s’est forgé une réputation","html_url":"https://publicasta.com/everyday_kitchen/rioja_spains_wine_signature?lang=fr","markdown_url":"https://publicasta.com/everyday_kitchen/rioja_spains_wine_signature.md?lang=fr","json_url":"https://publicasta.com/everyday_kitchen/rioja_spains_wine_signature.json?lang=fr","api_url":"https://publicasta.com/api/public/v1/channels/everyday_kitchen/articles/rioja_spains_wine_signature?lang=fr"},{"language":"pl","title":"Rioja: jak charakterystyczne wino Hiszpanii zbudowało swoją reputację","html_url":"https://publicasta.com/everyday_kitchen/rioja_spains_wine_signature?lang=pl","markdown_url":"https://publicasta.com/everyday_kitchen/rioja_spains_wine_signature.md?lang=pl","json_url":"https://publicasta.com/everyday_kitchen/rioja_spains_wine_signature.json?lang=pl","api_url":"https://publicasta.com/api/public/v1/channels/everyday_kitchen/articles/rioja_spains_wine_signature?lang=pl"},{"language":"ru","title":"Риоха: как фирменное испанское вино завоевало репутацию","html_url":"https://publicasta.com/everyday_kitchen/rioja_spains_wine_signature?lang=ru","markdown_url":"https://publicasta.com/everyday_kitchen/rioja_spains_wine_signature.md?lang=ru","json_url":"https://publicasta.com/everyday_kitchen/rioja_spains_wine_signature.json?lang=ru","api_url":"https://publicasta.com/api/public/v1/channels/everyday_kitchen/articles/rioja_spains_wine_signature?lang=ru"}],"_links":{"self":"https://publicasta.com/everyday_kitchen/rioja_spains_wine_signature.json?lang=en","api":"https://publicasta.com/api/public/v1/channels/everyday_kitchen/articles/rioja_spains_wine_signature?lang=en","html":"https://publicasta.com/everyday_kitchen/rioja_spains_wine_signature?lang=en","canonical":"https://publicasta.com/everyday_kitchen/rioja_spains_wine_signature?lang=en","markdown":"https://publicasta.com/everyday_kitchen/rioja_spains_wine_signature.md?lang=en","json":"https://publicasta.com/everyday_kitchen/rioja_spains_wine_signature.json?lang=en","channel":"https://publicasta.com/api/public/v1/channels/everyday_kitchen","channel_articles":"https://publicasta.com/api/public/v1/channels/everyday_kitchen/articles","search":"https://publicasta.com/api/public/v1/search","documentation":"https://publicasta.com/api-docs#reading-publicasta","openapi":"https://publicasta.com/api-docs/openapi.json","llms":"https://publicasta.com/llms.txt"}}
