# Slow Wi-Fi every evening? A safe router checklist before you buy new hardware

> A practical room-by-room way to tell whether evening Wi-Fi trouble comes from placement, channel congestion, household load or the provider line.

Evening Wi-Fi problems are frustrating because they look simple from the sofa and complicated inside the router menu. A film buffers, a video call freezes, the phone speed test falls in the back room, and the obvious guess is that the router is dying. Often the safer answer is slower and more useful: prove where the bottleneck is, change one setting at a time, and keep a written path back to the original configuration.

 - A phone or laptop that can run the same speed test in the same places.
- An Ethernet cable and a computer with Ethernet, if you have them; if not, use the router or ISP app diagnostics.

 Manufacturer guidance from TP-Link and other router makers is consistent: walls, ceilings, metal, aquariums, microwave ovens, cordless-phone bases, and poor router placement can weaken Wi-Fi.  A useful test is simple: stand near the router, connect the laptop or phone to 5 GHz or 6 GHz if available, run a test, then repeat in the difficult room. If the fast band collapses in the far room but 2.4 GHz remains stable, the fix may be placement, a mesh node, a wired access point, or Ethernet to that room—not necessarily a new internet plan.

 ## Step 5: Check channel and bandwidth without guessing wildly

 Do this conservatively. First look at the current setting and write it down. If the router is on automatic channel selection, leave it alone for one evening unless the analyzer shows heavy crowding or the router repeatedly chooses a noisy channel. On 2.4 GHz, avoid random overlapping channels; start with your country’s legal/common non-overlapping choices as presented by your router, often 1, 6, or 11. In a very crowded building, narrower bandwidth on 2.4 GHz can be more stable than chasing the widest setting.

- Wi-Fi near router good, one room poor: improve placement, add a wired access point, use mesh carefully, or plan an Ethernet run with a qualified installer.
- Only one device poor: update that device, forget/rejoin the network, check VPN, driver, battery-saving mode, and background apps.
- Slow only during family streaming hours: manage downloads, wire fixed devices, and verify whether the ISP slows at peak times.

 ## Step 9: When DIY is no longer appropriate

 Call the ISP when the wired test is far below the subscribed plan after a safe reboot, the modem lights show line faults, the provider app reports an outage, or the gateway is locked to provider management. Call the landlord or building manager before touching shared closets, hallway panels, roof equipment, building fiber/coax, or lease-controlled hardware.

 Call a licensed electrician or qualified low-voltage installer if there are warm or buzzing outlets, scorch marks, cracked adapters, water near equipment, tripping breakers, damaged in-wall cable, or a need for new in-wall Ethernet. Call a network technician if the home needs multiple access points, PoE cameras, VLANs, work-from-home reliability planning, outdoor links, or troubleshooting beyond ordinary router settings.

 ## Final checklist

 1. Test near the router and in the bad room; add Ethernet if possible.
2. Reboot safely; do not factory-reset casually.
3. Improve placement and ventilation.
4. Compare bands before blaming the ISP.
5. Adjust channel/bandwidth one change at a time and record the original setting.
6. Update firmware only through the manufacturer or ISP interface.
7. Remove household downloads from the test window.
8. Buy mesh, a new router, or professional help only after the evidence points there.

 ## Before spending money, confirm the evidence

 A new router, mesh kit, or faster plan can be the right answer, but each solves a different failure. A mesh node helps when the router has good internet and the far room has weak radio coverage; it does not repair a bad cable signal from the street. A faster plan helps when the household genuinely saturates the subscribed speed; it does not move a 5 GHz signal through brick, metal shelves, radiant-barrier insulation, or a router hidden in a cabinet. A new router helps when the old one is unsupported, overheats, lacks current security updates, or cannot handle the number of devices; it does not fix a damaged wall outlet, loose provider connector, or building wiring fault.

 Keep the final configuration boring and secure. Use WPA2-Personal or WPA3-Personal as supported by all your devices, a strong admin password, automatic security updates if the router offers them, and a guest network for visitors or low-trust smart devices when available. Do not chase online claims that tell you to disable encryption, firewalling, DNS protection, or automatic updates for speed. The safest successful repair is the one you can repeat: baseline test, one change, retest, record, and stop when the evidence points outside DIY.
