After the eggs hatch, the small larvae bore into stems and crowns, where contact sprays cannot easily reach them.\n\n The damage is mechanical and fast. As the larva tunnels, it disrupts water movement through the stem. The plant may wilt first during heat, then fail to recover overnight. Frass — a moist, sawdust-like mix of chewed plant tissue and insect waste — often accumulates near the entry hole. The crown can become mushy and vulnerable to rot.
