UGREEN has unveiled HomeAgent, an AI hub built around local storage, computing and device control. Reolink is previewing Home Hub 2 as a local storage and control centre for its cameras, with local AI features planned. Anker’s IFA announcements include MindBase, another local-oriented hub concept. Shelly, meanwhile, is approaching the same problem from the network layer with ThreadLink firmware for selected Gen4 devices.\n\n The practical question is not whether local AI sounds attractive. It does. The question is what these products will actually replace in a particular house. A camera NVR, a NAS, a Home Assistant server, a Matter controller, a cloud subscription and a voice assistant are different jobs. A new hub may combine some of them, but its compatibility list, release status and failure behaviour matter more than its model number or AI performance figure.\n\n This is the useful angle in the current IFA coverage: treat local AI hubs as possible infrastructure purchases, not as magic upgrades. If your main problem is monthly camera storage, a local recorder may help. If your problem is unreliable automations across brands, a camera company’s hub may not be the answer. If your problem is privacy, local processing reduces one category of exposure but does not make a camera system private by default.\n\n ## What was actually announced\n\n UGREEN’s September 9 announcement describes HomeAgent as a family rather than a single finished appliance. The HA100 is listed with 26 TOPS of local AI performance and 16GB of DDR5 memory. The HA100 Pro is listed with 205 TOPS, while the MasterAgent MA100 is built around NVIDIA’s Jetson Thor T5000. The company says the system combines local storage, AI computation and smart-home control, and that it can work with UGREEN cameras, speakers and frames as well as compatible third-party devices through open protocols.\n\n The headline functions are familiar from separate products, but their combination is new for UGREEN. HomeAgent is intended to analyse camera events locally, recognise people, vehicles, pets and packages, create summaries, search footage by keyword and link activity between cameras. UGREEN also describes voice control through its Uliya assistant, local file and photo handling, and automations for compatible smart-home devices through Matter.\n\n There is an important qualification buried in the product details: some camera features require HomeAgent. That means the hub is not merely an optional NAS for the cameras. It is part of the value proposition and, potentially, part of the switching cost. Buying the camera first and deciding later whether to add the hub may not deliver the advertised experience.\n\n It is also not a normal retail launch. UGREEN’s own campaign page describes deposits, a later Kickstarter pledge and scheduled shipping beginning in 2027, with different models and accessories shipping at different times. It says the deposit is not a final purchase and that crowdfunding rewards have a different returns position from ordinary retail goods. Those facts do not prove that the product will fail; they do mean that early buyers are evaluating a roadmap and fulfilment risk as well as hardware.\n\n Reolink’s Home Hub 2 is at an earlier stage in the public information cycle. Reolink’s IFA material calls it a central storage and control solution for multiple Reolink cameras and says it will support new local AI functions. The same material says the IFA appearance is a product preview, not a live demonstration, and that functions, availability and supported devices will be announced later. Reolink also says some ReoNeura features shown at IFA are still in development or depend on later products and firmware.\n\n That distinction matters. A company can demonstrate a direction without having published the details needed to choose a product: supported camera generations, drive capacity, retention rules, export formats, remote access method, integrations, local API behaviour and what continues to work if the vendor service disappears. Until those details exist, Home Hub 2 is a product to watch, not a sound basis for replacing a working recorder.\n\n Anker’s MindBase announcement points toward the broader category. Its proposed hub is designed to keep home data locally and to connect Anker devices with Matter-compatible products, with support claimed for major ecosystems including Apple Home, Alexa, Google Assistant and Home Assistant. That is a more ambitious promise than a camera recorder because it implies a general-purpose control layer. It also creates a larger compatibility burden: lighting, locks, sensors, energy devices and cameras do not share the same requirements simply because they can all be called smart.\n\n Shelly’s ThreadLink is not an AI hub and should not be put in the same product bucket. Shelly says its optional firmware for eligible Gen4 devices will use the built-in Thread radio as a full IP network connection. The company describes three simultaneous paths: Matter, Shelly Cloud and direct device-to-device communication through its RPC API. It says device-to-device scenes can continue locally when the internet or Wi-Fi fails, while cloud access still requires a Thread border router. Shelly says the update is planned as a free, opt-in release in about three months.\n\n ThreadLink is relevant because it attacks a different bottleneck. A camera hub tries to centralise data and inference. ThreadLink tries to make individual powered devices less dependent on Wi-Fi while preserving multiple control options. The two approaches can coexist, but buying a local AI box will not repair a weak Thread network, and moving a few relays to Thread will not give an existing camera archive natural-language search.\n\n ## The four jobs being bundled together\n\n Before comparing products, separate the jobs. Most confusion around local AI hubs comes from treating all local processing as one feature.\n\n The first job is recording. A recorder receives streams, writes them to storage, manages retention and lets you export evidence. For security cameras, this is the job most likely to save money compared with a subscription, but only if the cameras can send a usable stream to the recorder and the recorder remains accessible without a vendor account. A local label is not enough. Check whether storage is internal, removable or user-upgradable; whether the system supports continuous recording or only event clips; and how much footage survives at the chosen resolution and frame rate.\n\n The second job is interpretation. Object detection, event classification, summaries and semantic search require computation. Running them at home can reduce the amount of video uploaded for analysis and can make basic detection continue during an internet outage. It does not guarantee accurate results. A local model can still mistake a shadow for a person, miss a partially hidden package or describe an event incorrectly. It also consumes power and may require a newer camera, a particular codec or an add-on accelerator.\n\n The third job is device control. Turning on a light, closing a blind or setting a thermostat is a control problem. Matter may help with common device types, but Matter support does not mean every manufacturer-specific feature is exposed. A Matter bridge can show a camera, lock or relay to another ecosystem while hiding advanced controls, diagnostics or history. A general hub should therefore be judged by the devices you own, not by the number of protocols printed on its box.\n\n The fourth job is orchestration. An automation engine decides when something should happen and what conditions must be true first. It needs reliable state, clear event timing, recovery after restarts and safe defaults. An AI assistant can make it easier to express a routine, but natural-language control is not a substitute for a deterministic rule when the action affects a lock, heater, cooker, garage door or security system.\n\n A useful local hub may cover all four jobs. A specialised hub may do one or two exceptionally well. The mistake is paying for a general platform when the house only needs a recorder, or assuming a recorder is a general automation controller because it has a mobile app.\n\n ## Local processing is not the same as private processing\n\n The privacy case for local AI is real but narrower than the marketing language often suggests. If a camera event is analysed and stored on a device in the home, that particular video does not need to be uploaded to a vendor’s cloud for that particular task. Fewer copies can mean fewer places where a breach, account compromise or policy change can expose footage. Offline operation also reduces the chance that a temporary internet failure turns detection into a blank screen.\n\n But a local system still has an attack surface. It may contact a vendor for account login, notifications, firmware updates, remote access, diagnostics, model downloads or licence checks. A phone app may relay metadata through a cloud service even when the video is stored locally. Voice features may use a remote speech or language model unless the documentation says otherwise. A smart speaker with a local hub behind it may still send the spoken request away from home.\n\n The right questions are specific: what leaves the house, when, and for which feature? Can remote access be disabled while local access continues? Can a camera be blocked from the internet at the router without breaking recording? Are users told when a feature changes from local to cloud processing? Can administrators delete recordings, embeddings, face data and diagnostic logs separately? Is there a physical privacy control for indoor cameras? UGREEN, for example, advertises a physical shutter and the ability to disable camera and microphone access on its indoor camera. That is useful, but it is not evidence about every other device in the ecosystem.\n\n Facial recognition and voice control need an extra level of care. A local database of faces is still sensitive data. It should not be enabled casually for guests, cleaners, carers or neighbours. Voice history can reveal routines even if the audio is processed locally. A household should decide who can issue commands, which actions require confirmation, and whether camera search is available to every family member. Privacy is a system setting and a household rule, not a label on a processor.\n\n ## The compatibility trap: Matter solves less than the box suggests\n\n Matter is valuable because it gives devices a common commissioning and control model across major ecosystems. It is not a universal translation layer for every feature. The same product may expose an on/off control through Matter while reserving power charts, adaptive behaviour, calibration, camera search or advanced alarm logic for its own app.\n\n The controller also matters. A Matter-over-Thread device needs a Thread network, and Thread devices depend on border routers to connect that mesh to the local IP network. Home Assistant’s 2026.9 release makes this topology easier to inspect with a Matter network map, showing which devices use Thread or Wi-Fi, which nodes act as routers or border routers, and the path back to Home Assistant. Community discussion around the release is a useful reminder that visibility is practical: users reported finding the new map helpful for spotting network problems and understanding where devices had moved in the settings interface.\n\n That lesson applies to any new hub. Ask which radio it contains and which radio it controls. Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread, Bluetooth and infrared are not interchangeable. A hub can support Matter while lacking a Thread radio, relying on another device as a border router. It can support Thread while offering no useful route for a particular third-party Matter device. It can expose a device to Apple Home or Google Home while keeping the important controls behind its own service.\n\n Before buying, make a table of the devices already in the home. Record the exact model, connection method, current controller, features you actually use and the behaviour you need during an internet outage. Then compare that list with the manufacturer’s compatibility page, not a launch video. For cameras, add stream protocol, maximum number of cameras, audio support, recording modes and whether existing footage can be imported. For locks and heating, add manual fallback and local control. For lights and sensors, add battery life and mesh routing behaviour.\n\n If the hub is crowdfunding hardware, make a second table for promises. Put each advertised feature into one of four columns: demonstrated, documented, planned or dependent on another product. This simple distinction prevents a generous product page from turning an uncertain future feature into a purchase requirement.\n\n ## What the new hubs can replace\n\n A local AI hub can plausibly replace a cloud camera-storage plan when its supported cameras can record locally, the retention period meets the household’s needs, exports work, and remote notifications remain acceptable without continuous cloud processing. Calculate the real cost first. Include the hub, storage media if required, cameras, power, optional accessories and any subscription that remains necessary for remote access or advanced recognition. A subscription-free headline can still describe an expensive first year.\n\n It may also replace a small dedicated NVR if the camera brand has strong support for the cameras already installed. This is the most natural role for Reolink Home Hub 2, based on the information Reolink has published so far. But replacement should wait until the supported device list and recording behaviour are documented. Keep the existing NVR until the new system has recorded through a complete retention cycle and successfully exported clips.\n\n A general-purpose hub might replace a basic speaker-based controller for a household that wants one local place for Matter devices and simple scenes. That is the more interesting promise from HomeAgent and MindBase. Yet the test is not whether a voice assistant can turn on a lamp at a launch event. It is whether the hub can recover after a reboot, preserve schedules, handle duplicate devices, expose useful diagnostics and let another person operate the house without learning the vendor’s terminology.\n\n A local AI hub can sometimes replace a small home server used for a narrow workload, such as camera event detection or photo indexing. It should not automatically replace a mature Home Assistant installation, NAS or security recorder. Those systems may have years of integrations, backups, dashboards, local APIs and community troubleshooting behind them. Consolidation is attractive, but putting cameras, family photos and home control on one box also creates one larger failure domain.\n\n ## What it cannot replace safely\n\n No AI assistant should be the only control path for a safety-critical device. A smoke alarm still needs its own alarm function. A heating system needs its manufacturer’s safety controls and a manual override. A door lock needs a physical key, keypad or other dependable fallback. A garage door needs a local control and obstruction protection. A hub can coordinate these devices, but it should not become the only thing that makes them usable.\n\n Do not treat local automation as permission to bypass electrical protections. Smart relays and switches connected to mains circuits must be selected, installed and tested according to local rules, with qualified help where required. Thread, Matter and AI do not make an unsuitable enclosure, overloaded circuit or incorrect neutral connection safe. For renters, plug-in and no-drill options remain easier to remove and less likely to create a costly installation problem.\n\n A local box also does not eliminate maintenance. It needs updates, backups, storage monitoring, account security and a plan for failed hardware. If it stores camera footage or family files, protect it with a separate backup. A second copy on the same device is not a backup, and a backup that has never been restored is only an intention.\n\n ## A sensible buying decision in September 2026\n\n For most households, the best choice is to buy for a current problem and leave headroom for the future. Do not buy UGREEN HomeAgent because 26 TOPS sounds impressive. Buy it only if the documented first-release features solve a problem you have, the cameras and devices you own are supported, and you are comfortable with the crowdfunding timeline and warranty position. Treat the Pro and MasterAgent specifications as capacity claims, not as proof that a larger model will make everyday automations better.\n\n Do not buy Reolink Home Hub 2 as a replacement for a working recorder until Reolink publishes the supported camera list, storage details and local-access behaviour. Put it on a watch list if the appeal is a simpler Reolink camera archive with local analysis. A product preview can be useful news without being actionable shopping advice.\n\n Look at Anker’s MindBase in the same way: promising if you want local storage and a broad Matter-oriented ecosystem, but not yet a reason to reorganise a stable home around a launch specification. The more general the hub, the more important its escape routes become. Check whether devices can still be controlled from another ecosystem, whether data can be exported, and whether a failed hub leaves basic switches and schedules usable.\n\n Consider Shelly ThreadLink only for eligible Gen4 devices and only after the firmware is released and its integration details are clear. Its potential benefit is network resilience and lower reliance on Wi-Fi for device communication, not local AI. A Thread border router is still part of the design for cloud access and app control, and the firmware is opt-in. That makes it an incremental network decision rather than a reason to replace the central controller.\n\n For an existing Home Assistant user, the lowest-risk path is usually additive: test the new device in a separate area, keep the current controller, verify local operation and build a fallback before moving critical automations. Home Assistant’s recent Matter visibility improvements are a reminder that troubleshooting infrastructure is part of the product. A hub that makes its network, event history and failure state understandable is more valuable than one that merely answers a clever question on a good day.\n\n ## The test to run before trusting any hub\n\n Set up the smallest useful trial. Use one camera or one non-critical Matter device, not the whole house. Give the system a fixed IP address or a documented network reservation, update it, enable strong account protection and record which features work without internet access. If the manufacturer does not document offline behaviour, test it carefully rather than assuming the word local covers every path.\n\n Then simulate ordinary failures. Disconnect the internet while keeping the local network up. Restart the hub. Restart the router. Remove power briefly and restore it. Let storage fill far enough to observe the warning behaviour, without risking important footage. Test a notification, a manual control and an automation after each event. For cameras, export a clip and confirm its timestamp, audio and playback on another device. For a lock or garage door, test the physical fallback with the hub unavailable.\n\n Finally, ask whether the household will use the system six months later. A semantic search box is useful if it saves time finding a real event. A voice assistant is useful if it reduces friction without creating accidental actions. A local hub is useful if it lowers cloud dependence while remaining understandable when something breaks. If the product adds another app, another account and another single point of failure, its intelligence may be costing more attention than it saves.\n\n The IFA 2026 trend is worth following because it moves smart-home computing closer to the home and makes local storage and inference visible to ordinary buyers. That is a healthier direction than assuming every useful feature must be rented from a cloud service. But the durable buying rule is simple: choose the failure mode you can live with. Keep a manual control, verify the network path, separate demonstrated features from promises, and do not let an AI demo decide where the home’s most sensitive data or most important controls
