The convenience for turnover is real, but the battery burden can be quietly transferred to the person who did not choose the system. A lock can create sensitive data even without GPS. An older resident may not want a smartphone app. A child may not have a phone. A guest may not understand a temporary-code flow. A person with arthritis may prefer a fob to a stiff thumb-turn. A person with low vision may struggle with a flat touchscreen keypad. A religious or personal preference may make phone-based entry unacceptable on certain days. A domestic situation may make access logs sensitive.\n\n This is not a theoretical objection. The New York smart-lock dispute became emotionally powerful because tenants framed access as a basic need, not a convenience feature. A building can offer an app, a code, and a keycard and still fail a resident if the practical path they can reliably use is missing.\n\n If you install a lock for a household, test it with the least technical person who must use it. If you manage housing, do not assume “everyone has a phone” is an access policy.\n\n ## What renters should buy, if anything\n\n For most renters, the safest category is a reversible retrofit lock that fits over the inside thumb-turn and leaves the exterior keyhole and landlord key behavior unchanged. That does not make it legally allowed everywhere, but it reduces damage and lowers the chance of blocking required access. Photograph the original hardware, keep every screw and plate, and be ready to restore the door before moving out.\n\n Prefer locks that work locally for basic locking and unlocking. Bluetooth is not perfect, but a lock that can operate nearby without cloud remote access is less fragile than one that needs an online account for every important action. If you want remote unlock, understand whether it needs a Wi‑Fi bridge, a hub, Matter, HomeKit, or a vendor cloud service. Do not assume a lock is “local” because it appears in a smart-home app.\n\n Add a keypad only if it improves access for real people. Keypads are useful for cleaners, guests, children, and “my phone died” moments. They also create code hygiene problems. Can codes be changed locally? Can old guest codes be revoked? Is there anti-peep input? Does the keypad have its own battery? What happens in cold weather or rain?\n\n Avoid changing common building doors yourself. That is not a renter-friendly gadget; it is a building access system. Also avoid setups that remove the only mechanical access path, require all residents to create vendor accounts, or make landlord dashboards the center of daily entry.\n\n ## What landlords should do before installing one\n\n For long-term rentals, the tenant’s access should come first. A smart lock may help with turnover, maintenance visits, and temporary access, but it should not be used to make residents dependent on a proprietary app.\n\n A responsible landlord setup should keep mechanical keys, fobs, or another offline access method available. It should disclose what access logs exist and who can see them. It should explain battery replacement, low-battery alerts, emergency entry, lockout handling, data retention, and code changes in writing. It should accommodate residents who cannot or do not want to use a smartphone.\n\n It should also respect notice rules. A smart lock does not erase the difference between technical ability and legal permission. If local law requires notice before entry, the fact that a landlord can unlock remotely is not a shortcut around that obligation.\n\n Landlords should also separate short-term and long-term logic. Temporary codes are excellent for a weekend guest. A long-term tenant needs durability, privacy, and a route out of the system when the technology or tenancy changes.\n\n ## The seven tests before trusting the lock\n\n Run these tests before the lock becomes the household’s main access method.\n\n First, test the dead-phone scenario.
